︎︎︎ BRUSSELS

Élise De Maio is a French artist, bookbinder and paper and book designer, who lives and works in Brussels.
She initially studied space design, and later obtained her Master’s degree from the Book and Paper Design Studio at the ENSAV La Cambre, Brussels. Her work is based around her fascination for architectonic space as well as the physical potential of the book as an object, one that can be physically handled and explored.

Her items, half book and half sculpture, call into question the main functionality of an everyday object in the context of obsolescence. In this way, the book becomes a sensual space of aborted function that challenges the ancestral binding method as well as its materiality.
